Proposed Vehicle Registration Fee
The Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) has approved the placement of a measure on the November 2010 ballot that would add $10 to the cost of registering a motor vehicle in Contra Costa. The revenues will be used to improve local streets and roads, public transit and bicycle-pedestrian routes in Contra Costa communities. The opportunity to bring this measure to the voters is the result of state legislation that passed in 2009 (SB 83-Hancock), which requires that projects and programs funded directly benefit motore vehicle owners. CCTA made the decision to put the measure on the ballot in light of the significant backlog of unfunded transportation needs in the county, compounded by the diminishing availability of state and federal resources. A recent study conducted by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission shows that Contra Costa will have a $500 million funding shortfall for pavement maintenance and rehabilitation projects over the next 25 years. The estimated $8.5 million generated annually by this fee will help cities and the County, over time, to make significant progress towards the improvement and repair of local streets and roads.
